Medfield Football Coach, Others Aim to Fix Playoff Format

The Boston Herald reported Tuesday a new plan is on the table to fix the MIAA High School football playoff format.

Medfield football coach Vin Joseph and Stoughton football coach Greg Burke are leading a new playoff format proposal that aims at crowning a “true state champion,” according to the Boston Herald.

The plan, according to the Herald, will adjust the number of overall state title winners from nine this year to six.

The goal of the new format, according to the Herald:

  • Maintain current league structure.
  • Keep traditional Thanksgiving Day rivalries.
  • Allow eight teams per division to make the postseason.
  • Reward league champions with a berth.
  • Send teams that make the playoffs into their appropriate enrollment-based division.

The plan would not go into affect until 2013 if approved by the MIAA and the coaches. The plan is expected to be a focal point of discussion at the Nov. 10 Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association meeting.
