Medfield Field Hockey Season Ends in First Round Loss to Harwich

Medfield knocked out by Harwich, 3-2 in overtime Thursday.

The field hockey team had Harwich on the ropes in the first round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament Thursday, before a late surge by the Rough Riders ended the Warriors season.

Medfield, the 10th seed in the tournament, fell to seventh seed Harwich, 3-2 in overtime, despite the Warriors leading 2-0 at halftime.

“[We] came out blazing hot in the first half,” said Medfield head coach Mike Mason.

Emily Zlevor scored off a Julia Redden pass to give Medfield an early 1-0 lead and five minutes later, it was Redden converting on a Tori Brown pass to put the Warriors up 2-0.

That lead would hold heading into halftime but Harwich “put the pressure on” in the second half to tie the game and force overtime.

In field hockey, overtime is 15 minutes of seven-on-seven and it was an intense extra period, according to Mason.

“Both teams had tons of chances,” Mason said. “It really went back and forth for awhile.”

Harwich scored with five minutes to play in the first overtime and just like that, the Warriors’ field hockey team’s season came to an abrupt end.

“It was a great game,” Mason said. “The kids put it all on the field and played hard.”

Mason recalled Thursday’s overtime loss was not the first time Harwich has ended Medfield’s season in extra time.

“They beat us in triple overtime two years ago,” Mason said.

The Warriors finish the season with a 13-5-1 record while Harwich advances to Sunday’s quarterfinal round to play the winner of Friday’s Old Rochester vs. East Bridgewater game.
