Medfield Edges Foxboro Legion, 5-4 Tuesday

Medfield ends three-game slide with victory over Foxboro.

After starting the season 3-0, Medfield Post 110 lost the last three heading into Tuesday's game against Foxboro.

Medfield came back from deficits of 2-0 and 4-3 to win a close one, 5-4 and improve to 4-3 on the season. Foxboro falls to 3-4 in the District 6 West Standings

Foxboro jumped on the board in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead over Medfield. With two on and two outs, Tom Brady’s single brought in Aiden Farrell and advanced Nick Carafa to third to put Foxboro on the board 1-0. A Tom Savageau double scored Carafa but Brady was called out at home plate to end the top of the first inning.

Medfield responded in the bottom of the frame as Nick Santangelo was able to score on a single by Jim Magrath to cut the Foxboro lead in half, 2-1. A passed ball four batters later got James Sullivan home to tie the game at two. It was a rough game behind the plate for Brady, who is not the regular catcher, found himself in a tough position after Foxboro’s main catcher was unavailable.

“He’s not really the catcher but I gotta give the other guy (Mitch Goldenberg) a little rest,” said Foxboro coach Bill Travers.

Medfield would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth after Magrath’s double to center field drove in Santangelo to take a 3-2 lead over Foxboro.

The lead did not last for long. In the top of the fifth, Carafa’s single to left field was enough to get Steve Nagle home to tie the game. One batter later, Brady was able to hit a sacrifice fly to score Farrell from third and take a 4-3 lead over Medfield.

Foxboro failed to add to its lead in the top of the sixth inning as it loaded the bases with one out. Medfield kept Foxboro off the board by striking out Farrell and forcing Carafa to fly out to end the inning.

“You gotta score with your three, four hitter up bases loaded,” said Travers.

The momentum continued to swing in Medfield's favor in the bottom of the inning as Will Cousins singled to right field to score Gabe Mirabelli from third and tie the game at four. Magrath then scored on a passed ball to give Post 110 the 5-4 lead.

Magrath led Medfield with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, scoring a run and knocking in 2 RBI. Cousins went 1-for-4 with one RBI. Santangelo went 1-for-2 with a run scored and Sullivan finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.

On the mound, Medfield's Derek Latosek struck out one and gave up four earned runs over 4.2 innings. In relief, Jake Mintz pitch 0.1 innings and Walker Littlehale struck out one and gave up no runs over two innings of actions.

Nick Carafa struck out six with four earned runs over six innings for Foxboro.

The win improves Medfield's record to 4-3 while Foxboro falls to 3-4. Post 110 is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Canton for a 5:45 p.m. game. Medfield returns home Thursday when it hosts Canton at 5:45 p.m.
