ORIGINAL STORY -- June 15, 2013, 5:45 a.m.

A stellar Medfield High School boys lacrosse season came to a close on Friday night in Worcester as the Warriors fell just one victory shy of a state title.

Division 2 state championship game at Foley Stadium was close throughout, but Longmeadow eventually came out on top, 10-7.

Medfield lost just three times during the regular season and snagged the No. 2 seed in the East Division 2 tournament, setting up its strong playoff run.

The Warriors cruised past North Attleboro, 13-3, in the preliminary round, snuck past Catholic Memorial by a 14-11 score in its next game and toppled Marblehead, 16-6, in the quarterfinal.

After a 14-6 win over Reading in the East semifinal, Medfield needed an overtime thriller to earn the sectional crown. The Warriors nipped Hingham, 11-10, in the extra session to set up its meeting with western Massachusetts champion Longmeadow.

Friday's loss ended the Medfield season at 22-4. Though the program was unable to win its sixth state championship since 2004, it was still a strong season.

"Tough loss but boys fought to the last second," a tweet from the Medfield HS boys lacrosse account said shortly after the game. "Can't ask for more than that."
