Medfield Baseball Expects to Stay on the Offensive in 2011

Warriors hope powerful lineup can lead to another state tournament berth.

In an ultra-competitive Tri-Valley League, the Medfield High School baseball team finished second in 2010 with a 14-7 record and a trip to the MIAA state tournament.

Despite several key losses due to graduation, the Warriors are expecting similar results in 2011 behind its big bats.

"Our strength was our offense," said Medfield head coach Matthew Marenghi. "Having several times put over 20 runs on the board [last season]. Our strength will likely be hitting again, with our pitching being the big question mark."

Marenghi said Chris Warren, Korey Kuzmich and Phil DeSeignora will be the significant losses to this year's roster but has full confidence in captains Mike Keleher, Jimmy Magrath, and Beau Nixon and expects Brian McCloud, Will
Cousins, and TJ Valente to play key roles this season.

"We have a good balance this season of upper and under classmen with five seniors, 12 juniors, two sophmores, and one freshman," Marenghi said.

Marenghi, in his fifth year as Warriors' head coach, said his team's goal is to first "play great baseball and make the state tournament."

That is no small task playing in a division like the TVL, where wins are often difficult to come by as the competition is relatively even.

"Our league is tough from year to year," said Marenghi. "It boasts reigning Division 3 state champions Norton. Hopkinton has won the league the past four
seasons."

Medfield has not won a state title and last won the TVL in 1997. The Warriors' 2011 campaign begins with an immediate challenge as Medfield hosts the defending TVL champion Hillers at 3:45 p.m. at Curt Schilling Field.
