Puttering Along

Ephesians 1:19-20 (NLT) - I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe Him.  This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead.

In God is Able, Priscilla Shirer paints an image of “a little old grandma-looking woman with gray hair and slumped shoulders that barely makes it over the steering wheel” putt-puttering along in a late model Mustang at 20 mph.  Got the picture?

It’s kind of cute and sweet, right?  But what a waste!  Think of all the untapped power, excitement and fun just waiting to be set loose in that car!  Instead of wowing admirers, the car and driver summon quaint, nostalgic thoughts – perhaps a bit sad.

The illustration could be a snapshot of what you and I look like as Christians.  But I’m not a gray haired old lady (yet)!  Shirer says we are:

Endowed by God with an enormous amount of power, yet tinkering along at a spiritual snail’s pace, taking up a lane but not really letting Him take us anywhere.  Trading adventure for what feels to us (deceptively) like complete control.  As a result, not only do we miss out on feeling the wind of destiny and abundance in our own hair, we also potentially clog up the pipeline of blessing for others coming up behind us.  We forfeit opportunities to show what happens when His foot is on the accelerator of our lives.

We were created to floor people when they see God’s mighty power at work inside us. Our juiced-up spiritual engines were made to purr with the joy and strength He provides.  We were meant to wheel into each day’s traffic with His high-octane ability and supernatural power coursing through our fuel lines.
