On a Mission

From John 17 – Jesus prays for the disciples (and us) - I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.  I am glorified in those you have given to me.  They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.  Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world.  I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.

Why would I be writing about Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane at Christmas time?

Just before Jesus leaves this world, He talks about why He came and we are, of course, celebrating His coming.  Why did Jesus take on human form?  God loved us so much and saw that we were making a mess of things.  He sent Jesus to rescue us, to show us who God is and to embody His love.  Jesus came on a mission and brought glory to God by fulfilling His purpose – even in death.

But notice this prayer in Gethsemane.  Jesus prays for his disciples and all who will believe in the future.  He sends us into the world in the same way God sent Jesus.  We do not belong here.  We belong with God and are here for a short time with the purpose of showing others who God is, displaying His love and bringing God glory.

In your brief blip in God’s epic story, how can you best bring Him glory?  Does your life reveal God to others?
