Inspired by Loss

Colossians 3:10 (NLT) – Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.

1 John 4:17 (NLT) – And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect.  So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face Him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.

On Sunday I attended the memorial service for a good man gone far too soon.  It was sad and tearful, but what moved me most was the accompanying gratitude.  Everyone present was so very grateful for having known John.  It was the first service I’ve ever attended that felt truly good.

Stories were told of his genuine heart for others – every other, every individual.  Examples were given of his encouraging high fives for your best effort.  John’s zest for life, insatiable curiosity, humility, joy and fearlessness were both appreciated and admired.  Sometimes the character of the deceased is exaggerated in memorials.  Not this time.  John touched people.  He affected them.  Knowing John made you better.

In the midst of such great loss, there was inspiration.  I’m sure I’m not the only mourner who left that church wanting to be more like John.  If so many people were positively affected, he must have done it right.  Kind.  Generous.  Selfless.  Inclusive.  Enthusiastic.  Engaged.  Present.  The evidence of a life lived like Christ was moving.
