Digging for Treasure

Proverbs 2:1-6 (NLT)

My child, listen to what I say,
    and treasure my commands.

Tune your ears to wisdom,
    and concentrate on understanding.

Cry out for insight,
    and ask for understanding.

Search for them as you would for silver;
    seek them like hidden treasures.

Do you dig through your accessory drawer to find just the right gem (or tie) for the day?  You have go-to favorites.  One corner has a particular color.  What suits your mood or makes you feel beautiful?  Some days yield a quick pick while other days you linger in thought.  Some days you forget entirely.  Accessorizing has become a habit.  Routine.  Finding a daily message from God’s book of wisdom might take some practice too, but  you will learn to tune your ears.

I like to read a verse several times and let it tumble around in my head as I go about my morning chores.  Where does the verse take my thoughts and why?  What does it mean for my life?  Sometimes a word or phrase jumps off the screen and slaps me in the face offering encouragement, affirmation, a new perspective, conviction or correction.   Reading different translations can expand the nuances of a verse because the original Hebrew and Greek don’t always translate easily to English.  If one verse or devotion doesn’t speak to me, I read another.  Almost every day, one of the devotions I read contains a personal message.

Search for God’s message as you would for silver; seek His wisdom like hidden treasures.
