Worthy: MHS Elects New Student Council Officers

Editor's note: The following article was written by Taylor Worthy, a Medfield High School student and member of the student newspaper, "The Kingsbury Chronicle." Worthy's piece is part of Medfield Patch's weekly series, "Warrior Weekly."

Last month, before school let out, Medfield High School students elected five new Student Council officers for the 2012-2013 school year.  All elected officers ran unopposed.

The new officers will lead the council and will have most direct contact with the administration and faculty.  Student Council representatives often come to the officers with ideas and suggestions for them to put into action in conjunction with Student Council advisor Ms. Jessica Safer.

Junior Blake Brown, Student Council member for his three years at MHS, was elected as president. He will create agendas for all meetings, run the meetings, and organize the Pep Rally at the beginning of the year, among other responsibilities. The president maintains constant communication with administration and faculty.

Brown said, “I think the best thing about leading the Student Council is being able to reach out not only to my grade, but also to the entire school” and later said he hopes to “get to know more of the underclassmen next year.”

Elected as vice president next year is junior MaryEllen Krah.  She will work closely with Brown next year to run all of the Student Council meetings.

When asked about her plans for next year Krah said, “I’m really looking forward to trying some new events and continuing the others [from the past].”

Junior Rose Sievewright, elected as Secretary, will record minutes at next year’s meetings. The Secretary sends out minutes and important reminders to all Student Council representatives.  Sievewright will maintain effective communication within the council and update the faculty and administration about Student Council functions, events, and initiatives.

Treasurer of the Student Council, junior Catherine Cawley, maintains the council’s funds. Cawley will give the council updates about its financial status and make deposits and withdrawals for council functions.

Junior TJ Gianci was elected as the representative to the School Committee. In this position, Gianci is not only an officer for the Student Council, but he is also a permanent member of the School Committee and attends their meetings. He will strive to increase communication between the Committee and the MHS student body. Gianci will be responsible for voicing the opinions and desires of the council to the School Committee.

Another member of MHS Student Council, junior Joe Marie, was recently elected to an extremely prestigious position in our district. He holds the new role of vice president of CDMASC (Central District Massachusetts Association of Student Councils) and will organize events for the entire region. Marie serves as a liaison to the Executive Board to maintain communication between the MHS council and the regional council.

These student leaders have big shoes to fill since the senior executive board members and representatives have graduated. However, they plan to work as hard as the officers before them to “continue a legacy of excellence,” according to Brown.
