Second graders from Ralph Wheelock Elementary School planted after the third graders harvested vegetables from the Victory Garden.

Even with snow on the ground the morning of Oct. 28, hearty second graders were out in the Victory Garden planting in the garden beds.

Each second grader planted garlic and each student was shown how to properly dig in the soil and how to properly cover their planting with dirt. The second graders also got to taste and smell the herbs from the herb garden, which consisted of sage, thyme, oregano, chive and lavender.

Earlier in the week, the third graders harvested 250 pounds of potatoes, 100 pounds of carrots, 40 pounds of onions and 40 pounds of garlic from this garden.

These vegetables had been planted last spring and will be used in a stew made at the third grade Rocky Woods Feast later this week. This feast is an annual third grade event.

Sonja Johanson from the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association, and the volunteer in charge of the Victory Garden along with other volunteers, spent a good portion of the day on Oct. 28 working in the garden with each and every second grade student. Johanson and volunteers are dedicated to teaching the children all about the importance of gardening.
