Needed: The Plaid Shirt Off Your Back (and Your Worn Jeans, Too)

Blake Middle School is collecting worn plaid shirts and jeans with which they will make scarecrows for charity.

Blake Middle School's "Community Crusaders" is a group of seventh grade boys who perform community service in Medfield.

This week, the group is collecting second-hand adult jeans and old plaid shirts that will be used to create scarecrows that will be sold later this month at a golf tournament in honor of their classmate and fellow Crusader, William Johnson.

The Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy will hold its Sixth Annual Fall Classic at the New England Country Club in Bellingham.

"We throw on a new player jersey or other fun shirt to entice the bidders and they make for very fun autumnal course decorations at each hole," said Heidi Johnson, William's mother.

Donations of worn -- the more worn, the better -- can be dropped off through Oct. 3 at the main office of Blake Middle School or through Friday, Oct. 5 at noon on the Johnson's front porch at 3 Hospital Road.
