MHS Student Council Achieves Excellence with MASC Award

The Medfield High School Student Council made history in March when it was named a Bronze Council of Excellence by the Massachusetts Association of Student Councils for the first time in the council's history.

Led by Student Council officers, MaryEllen Krah and Blake Brown, the Student Council made history in March when it was named a Bronze Council of Excellence at the annual Massachusetts Association of Student Councils (MASC).

Thirteen MHS Student Council (STUCO) members and advisor Jess Safer compiled a Council of Excellence binder, which was submitted to MASC in February.

“All [STUCO’s] representatives who went [to the MASC conference in March] were committed to putting this binder together,” said Evan Berry, MHS senior and Student Council representative to the Medfield School Committee. “We were named a Bronze Council of Excellence. This is the first time it’s ever happened in the student council’s history.”

Berry said while he did not get to attend the annual conference in Hyannis this year, he felt it was a great opportunity for the 13 students that did represent Medfield and a valuable reward for their hard work.

“It was an awesome experience for all the kids who wanted to get involved in student council,” Berry said. “This is their opportunity as sophomores, freshmen and even the juniors to step up and I think it really inspired a lot of kids to go forth with it.”

Berry hopes the bronze award will be the beginning of sustained excellence in the future.

“We are really happy about it,” said Berry. “Hopefully we can get a gold council after I’m gone.”

In order to be accredited as a “Council of Excellence,” MHS STUCO representatives worked together to assemble a binder which conveys the council’s success and active involvement in the school.

“[Student Councils] submit a massive binder of everything [they’ve] done and write-up all of these sections [MASC] expects of the councils,” Berry said.

On March 9, 13 MHS STUCO members and Safer were in attendance at the MASC Council of Excellence Award conference in Hyannis to accept the bronze award.
