MHS Principal Announces 2011 Presidential Scholar Candidates

Four MHS seniors qualified for candidacy as part of the 2011 United States Presidential Scholars Program.

Medfield High School Principal, Judy Noble, announced the names of four seniors who have qualified for candidacy as part of the 2011 United States Presidential Scholars Program: Catherine Aker, Richard Horan, Kathleen Krah and Jennifer Thornton.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to recognize and honor some of the country’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.  The program was expanded in 1979 to include students who have exhibited exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts.  Application to the program is by invitation only.

Candidates are evaluated on their “academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities, and the quality and content of their essay.”

Approximately 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars each year, 20 of whom are designated as Arts Scholars.  As noted by the U.S. Department of Education Commission on Presidential Scholars, selected students “represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth”.  Each Scholar will be honored in June during the National Recognition Weekend in Washington, D.C.  Finalists will be announced at the beginning of May.  For more information on this program and the selection process, please go to the Commission’s website.
