Medfield Student to Compete in Regional Spelling Bee

Montrose School seventh grader competing in Saturday's 2011 Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee.

Thirteen-year-old Molly Cahill knows a little bit about “lackadaisical” and a lot about “globalization” – two of the several words that earned her a spot in the 2011 Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee.

Cahill is a seventh grade student at the Montrose School, an independent school for girls in grades 6-12, where she competed against students in grades 6, 7 and 8 to secure her spot in Saturday’s local qualifier for the Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held in Washington, D.C. in June.

Cahill said she was nervous when she heard the final word.

“I was nervous at the end but I felt that, if I had gone through all those rounds, I felt I could do it one more time,” she said.

Students in grades 6 through 8 first took a written spelling test, then the highest scorers participated in an oral round, and the top three winners from each grade went on to the final Bee, where Cahill ultimately prevailed.

“She has always loved to read, which I think helps all kids with their spelling,” said her mother, Julie Cahill.  “I’m very proud of her and I know she’s looking forward to representing Montrose at the Regional Spelling Bee."

A total of 23 students will take part in the regional competition representing Braintree, Canton, Franklin, Halifax, Hanover, Hanson, Hingham, Holbrook, Kingston, Medfield, Norton, Norwell, Norwood, Plympton, Quincy, Rockland, Walpole, and Westwood.

The regional winner will receive a six-day trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the National Spelling Bee.

“We are grateful to Comcast for sponsoring this competition for the third straight year, as this is such a great opportunity for local students on the South Shore to receive public recognition as academic ‘All Stars,’” said Lisa Morrissey of LIDO Consulting Group, which organizes the regional bee, in a recent press release.  “This is a great showcase for local students who want to put their spelling knowledge to the ultimate test.”

The Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee can be seen through Comcast’s On Demand feature later this month.
