Come Cheer On Special Olympics TODAY at Blake

The public is encouraged to attend the games and cheer on students from Medfield and surrounding towns.

In the past, Medfield special education students have participated in the Track & Field Special Olympic events in Attleboro, but this year have created their own event right here in Medfield.

"Four other towns have joined with us for the Basketball Day Games on April 5 at Blake," said Medfield Public Schools Director of Pupil Services Matthew LaCava.

Medfield students will be joined by athletes from Millis, Medway, Ashland and Holliston -- five towns that now make up their own special charter of the Special Olympics.

"It's wonderful the way the towns have rallied around this," said LaCava, noting future events could rotate from town to town (next year they will be in Medway) and have different themes.

The public is invited to attend, and cheer on, the event TODAY, Friday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Blake Middle School gymnasium.

The event will include approximately 65 students, including 16 or 17 from Medfield, who have been working on basketball skills in their adaptive physical education classes. On Friday, they will participate in different skill stations such as a "bounce pass" and a "partner pass."

"We're doing a basketball theme around the March Madness theme," said LaCava.

Family, friends and community members are encouraged to attend the event and cheer on these special athletes.

Anyone interested in making a donation to the program can contact LaCava or Trish Mullen (another member of the Games Committee) at Blake Middle School.
