Medfield High School's Fall Athletics Debut This Week

The 2011 fall athletic seasons at Medfield High School get underway this week with the boys' and girls' soccer teams beginning play Tuesday.

's fall athletic programs saw plenty of success in 2010 and will aim to continue that success in 2011 when seasons open this week.

Seven of the eight MHS fall programs qualified for the state tournament a year ago and two won state championships (girls' soccer and girls' volleyball). 

The Warriors' girls' soccer team will begin its MIAA Division 2 state title defense Tuesday when they travel to Norton for a 3:30 p.m. game. The Medfield High School boys' soccer team also opens Tuesday, hosting Norton at 5 p.m.

Medfield High School Boys' Soccer

  • 2010 Record: 14-3-2, 13-1-2
  • Tri-Valley League Finish: First place
  • MIAA Division 2 South Seed: Fifth
  • MIAA Division 2 South Tournament Finish: Lost to Bishop Feehan, 1-0 (penalty kicks), in sectional quarterfinals.
  • Head Coach: Jason Heim
  • Player to Watch: Junior Paul Fischer
  • Key Losses: Aidan Harrison, Chris DiPisa
  • Season Opener: Tuesday, Sept. 6, vs. Norton, 5 p.m.
  • Notes: Medfield won its third straight Tri-Valley League title in the last four years in 2010 and advanced to the Division 2 South Sectional quarterfinals, losing to Bishop Feehan, 1-0, in penalty kicks. The team will be full of youth this season as the Warriors lost 16 players to graduation this past June. 

Medfield High School Girls' Soccer

  • 2010 Record: 21-1-2, 15-1-2
  • Tri-Valley League Finish: First
  • MIAA Division 2 South Seed: Second
  • MIAA Division 2 South Tournament Finish: Defeated Auburn, 4-0, to win the Division 2 State Championship 
  • Head Coach: Mike LaFrancesca
  • Players to Watch: Sophomore Shea Newman, junior Katelyn Murray, junior Ali Gold, junior Mimi Borkan 
  • Key Losses: Isabelle Hackett, Kate Wasley, Kate Piersak, Savannah Judge
  • Season Opener: Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Norton, 3:30 p.m.
  • Notes: It was a season of firsts in 2010 for the Medfield High School girls' soccer team, who won its first ever TVL title and its first ever state championship as a result of a dominating season that saw only one loss. In the MIAA State Tournament, the Warriors strung together six straight victories enroute to the state title win over Auburn. Medfield lost seven seniors to graduation in June. 

Medfield High School Girls' Volleyball

  • 2010 Record: 25-0, 16-0
  • Tri-Valley League Finish: First
  • MIAA Division 2 Central Seed: First
  • MIAA Division 2 Central Tournament Finish: Defeated Fairhaven, 3-0, to win the Division 2 State Championship 
  • Head Coach: Jack Hastings
  • Players to Watch: Senior captains Rachel Wyman, Natalie Gill, Campbell Reiff.
  • Key Losses: Natalie Dickinson, Hannah Donnelly, Kathleen Krah
  • Season Opener: Wednesday, Sept. 7 vs. Norton, 6:30 p.m.
  • Notes: The girls' volleyball program is one of the most successful in Medfield's history. The Warriors have won 61 straight games, six state championships since 1998, including three straight Medfield defeated Fairhaven, 3-0 to win the Division 2 State Championship. Medfield will fill a roster full of underclassmen in 2011 as only three seniors are on the roster (three captains)There are eight juniors on the squad 

Medfield High School Boys' Golf

  • 2010 Record: 16-1-1, 16-1-1
  • Tri-Valley League Finish: Second
  • MIAA Division 3 Seed: N/A
  • MIAA Division 3 Tournament Finish: Finished third in Division 3 state tournament. 
  • Head Coach: George Callaghan
  • Players to Watch: Seniors and captains David Swanson, Mike Mulrey and Cal Given, junior Mike DiFiore, senior Pat O’Reilly 
  • Key Losses: N/A
  • Season Opener: Wednesday, Sept. 7 vs. Norton, 3 p.m.
  • Notes: The Medfield High School boys' golf team turned in one of its best seasons in program history, finishing third in the MIAA Division 3 State Tournament and second behind Hopkinton in the Tri-Valley League championship. The Warriors won the regular season TVL crown with a 16-1-1 record. All six players who competed in the D3 State Championship in 2010 are returning to the course this season.

Medfield High School Field Hockey

  • 2010 Record: 9-5-6, 6-3-5
  • Tri-Valley League Finish: Second
  • MIAA Division 2 South Seed: Seventh
  • MIAA Division 2 Tournament Finish: Lost in quarterfinal round to MIAA Division 2 South Sectional Tournament to Canton, 1-0.
  • Head Coach: Mike Mason
  • Players to Watch: Junior goalkeeper Carrie Cook, senior Lauren Yancich, seniors Megan Tschirch and Meghan Keleher and junior Lilly Beardsley
  • Key Losses: Meara Stack, Julia Biedrzycki, Tori Brown, Emily Zlevor and Kara Pelosi
  • Season Opener: Friday, Sept. 9 vs. Westwood, 3:30 p.m.
  • Notes: The Medfield High School field hockey team returns a strong corps of players that finished second to Hopkinton in the TVL last season and advanced to the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional quarterfinal round before falling to Canton, 1-0. 

Medfield High School Boys' Cross Country

  • 2010 Record: 8-0, 8-0
  • Tri-Valley League Finish: First
  • MIAA All-State Championship Finish: Finished fifth.
  • Head Coach: Mike Kraemer
  • Season Opener: Wednesday, Sept. 7 vs. Ashland, 3:30 p.m.

Medfield High School Girls' Cross Country
