Medfield Girls' Hockey Faces Off Against King Philip Tonight

MHS travels to Foxboro for a 6:30 p.m. make-up game with KP.

It is a battle of Warriors tonight in Foxboro as Medfield High takes on King Philip Regional at 6:30 p.m. in a game that was originally scheduled for Feb. 2 but was postponed due to .

Medfield returned to the ice Saturday against Westwood after a week away from game action and beat the Wolverines, 3-2. Nicole Reardon (2) and Jeanette Barone were the goal scorers for Medfield (11-0-2). The Warriors led 1-0 after the first period and 2-1 after the second, but in the intermission leading up to the third period, the team was dealt a blow when head coach Molly Norton made the difficult decision to replace banged up and hurting goalie Mimi Borkan with captain Meara Stack – usually a defenseman.

The decision paid off as Stack allowed just one goal – Westwood tied Medfield, 2-2 at 13:44 – in the period and Reardon netted her second tally of the night for the eventual game-winner.

"As coaches, we have been talking to the girls and encouraging them to work together as a team and trust one another," said Norton.  "[Saturday's] game was an example of how far we have come as a team and how much stronger we have grown in the past few months.  It was a team effort tonight."

The Warriors have a challenging week ahead with games tonight, Tuesday and Wednesday. There's little rest for the well-rested and Medfield begins its flurry of games against a struggling KP squad.

Girls' Hockey:

Medfield (11-0-2, 9-0-2) at  King Philip (2-5-1, 2-8-2)
The Foxboro Sports Center, Foxboro, 6:30 p.m.

The Wrentham-based Warriors are just 2-8-2 this season and 2-5-1 in the Southeastern North division, according to the Boston Globe. The two teams met on Dec. 18 and Medfield came away with the 7-1 victory.

While most coaches argue time away from games often hurt teams more than it helps – the break in game action appears to have refocused Medfield after Saturday's 3-2 victory over Westwood. Medfield showed the ability to overcome adversity and responded well as a team against a . Norton has asked time and time again for players to step up and help contribute outside of stars Borkan and Amanda Cronin – on Saturday, that was exactly what happened. Stack volunteered to play goalie for a hurting Borkan, Reardon netted two goals and Barone shined in her transition from defense to offense with a goal. Oh, and Cronin played an excellent game on defense for good measure. Norton described it as a "great team win" and it certainly was.

Prediction: Even when Medfield has struggled at times this season, it has found a way to take points away from games. The Warriors are unbeaten (11-0-2) and were dealt draws against competitive Canton and Westwood teams. The expectation all season has been to win every time the Big Blue steps on the ice and 11 and out of 13 times they have done just that. Expect another team effort – with a close eye on the status of Borkan – and another Medfield victory. Warriors to win.

Smith's season prediction record: 37-8.
