According to Town Historian Richard DeSorgher:
Sergeant McCarthy of the Medfield MA Police Department was working a detail at a road construction site when a speeding motorist, driving a pickup truck, ran through the barricades and the officer's vehicle before striking the officer. He was pronounced dead at the scene moments later.
McCarthy was Medfield's first (and, to date, only) officer lost “in the line of duty.”
