Medfield Historical Society Presents 'Medfield's Newcomers; Cultural Stories of Medfield's Past'

The following was submitted by the Medfield Historical Society:

The will present the first of its spring programs, “Medfield’s Newcomers; Cultural Stories of Medfield’s Past,” taking place at the at 26 North St. in Medfield. on Feb. 6 at 7:30 pm.

Throughout its history, ethnic ‘newcomers’ have settled in Medfield. From the first English Puritans who settled the town in the 1650s, the French Acadians from Canada who were forced out of their homeland and resettled here in the mid-1700s and the Irish who immigrated here in the 19th century to the wealthy social elite of Boston who came here at the turn of the 20th century in search of summer estates, the Italians who arrived in the early 1900s and the post WWII  “city people” who poured into the town from the late 1940s to the 1960s, each group brought a change and a new diversity to the town.

Working in conjunction with the and its new “” initiative, the program will revolve around one of the many themes of the book “Outwitting History” by Massachusetts resident Aaron Lansky ―the immigration experience.

Each of Medfield’s ethnic “newcomers” will be brought to town through readings, slides, music and song.

"We will explore their history, their struggles, the prejudice and hardships they faced and the contributions they brought to the town," the historical society said.

The program will feature numerous local residents representing a variety of ethnic groups that make up the town today, who will act as readers. They will begin the program readings by telling their own personal stories of how their immigrant families arrived in Medfield.

Admission is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the program.
