Dale Street Elementary School Holds Annual Fifth Grade Winter Concert

On Tuesday night, 152 students from Dale Street Elementary School performed at the annual winter concert held this year in the Lowell Mason Auditorium of the Medfield High School. Lowell Mason was the founder of music education in America's public school

Music filled the air of Medfield High School's Lowell Mason Auditorium on Tuesday night as the Dale Street Elementary School's string orchestra and band took center stage.

Lowell Mason (1792-1872) was the founder of music education in America's public school system.  He, like the Dale Street students, grew up in Medfield.

Under the direction of Sharon Woodworth and Ryan Dexter, 152 students performed musical pieces they learned over the last three months.

"This is just a terrific night; it's one I always look forward to because you never know how far these guys are going to go in the program," said Ryan Dexter, Medfield's Grades 5-8 Band Director.  "I've been here 12 years and have seen them start down here in fifth grade and graduate through the band program in the high school."

The string orchestra, under the direction of Woodworth, began the program with arrangements including Suo Gan, Cruise Control, Mountain Bike, theme from the New World Symphony, Loch Lomond, and Cripple Creek.

Shark Attack, Spy Movie 2, and Skeleton's Lair (an original work by Dave Ruggiero and orchestra director Sharon Woodworth) were performed by the Dale String Chamber Group including Conner Howells, Katharine Lapham, Lauren Mileti, Maddie Moon, Anna Passas, Bryan Qian and Jack Shurtleff.

The band, under the direction of Dexter, performed Hot Cross Buns, Au Claire de la Lune, Down by the Station, Merrily We Roll Along, Lightly Row, Good King Wenceslas, Jolly Old St. Nicholas, Farm Out, Jingle Bells and Mickey Mouse March.

The filled auditorium also enjoyed several solo performances that highlighted the musical talents of Dale Street's fifth grade students.
