Utility Pole Could Delay Starbucks Opening

Town officials will meet with NSTAR reps today regarding the utility pole for Starbucks.

Town officials will meet with NSTAR representatives this morning (Wedn., July 17) regarding a utility pole the company plans to install to supply power to the new Starbucks.

According to Assistant Town Administrator Kristine Trierweiler, the proposed pole would be in an awkward location.

"We don't love the pole location, it is right at the end of the pocket park," Trierweiler told the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night. "It is not great visually from either side."

For years, the town has planned to make the green space on North Street between Zebra's and the new Starbucks into a small pocket park to be enjoyed by downtown foot traffic. The proposed utility pole would create problems for the town's vision.

NSTAR has a public hearing scheduled with the Board of Selectmen on August 6 regarding the new pole. Trierweiler hopes that, by meeting with NSTAR today, they can find an alternate location so the pole installation (which can take up to a month) does not delay Starbucks' opening set for the end of August.
