Utility Box Art is on Selectmen's Agenda

The Medfield Board of Selectmen will meet with the Medfield Cultural Council tonight to discuss a paintbox program that would beautify the town's municipal utility boxes.

Did you ever notice the utility boxes in town, many near stop lights? Some people have noticed them and find them unattractive. Some people have never noticed them.

Either way, did you know they are owned by the town, and did you also know they are the perfect canvas for public art?

Tonight, the Board of Selectmen will meet with the Medfield Cultural Council which is proposing a "paintbox" program, much like a similar program in Boston

"We want to start with the utility box outside Bank of America as an anchor in the Cultural District," said MCC Chairman Jean Mineo. "We are also including the box in front of CVS because if its prominent location, though outside of the Cultural District. Essentially the program commissions an artist to create an original work of art on the utility box to enhance the neighborhood and reduce graffiti."

Mineo says the MCC is committed to raising funds to beautify those two boxes, and she says that, if businesses or individuals can help fund the other boxes, the program can be expanded.

"I am hopeful that may happen once people can see the beautiful results. Once you notice these boxes, you'll see them everywhere."
