Sunoco to Pay State $2.2M in Settlement

The company allegedly sought payment from the state while being paid by insurers, according to reports.

Sunoco, Inc. has agreed to pay the state of Massachusetts $2.2 million as part of a settlement, according to a Boston.com report Monday afternoon

The money is meant to settle allegations that the fuel company sought payment from Massachuetts for hazardous waste cleanup at gas stations, while simultaneously being reimbursed by its insurers, according to the report. 

The money was allegedly received from a state fund that was set up to speed the cleanup for environmentally-dangerous leaks from underground storage tanks.

As part of the agreement, the company will pay about $970,000 to the cleanup fund and $1.23 million to the state's general fund, according to Boston.com.
