Selectmen Support Veterans' Tax Work-Off Program

The Board of Selectmen supports a warrant article to implement a tax work-off program for veterans.

Later this month, Medfield Town Meeting will be asked to approve a tax work-off program for veterans.

Veterans' Service Agent Ron Griffin said the program will allow four Medfield veterans to volunteer in the town to "work off" $500 from their property tax bill.

This is part of the federal Servicemen's Valor Act which was implemented last year as a way to help military men and women transition from their military careers into civilian lives.  The surviving spouse of a serviceman “killed as a result of action” can also participate in the program.

The town meeting vote would be only to begin the program, not the details, though Griffin suggests the program be available to veterans under the age of 60 because those over 60 would be eligible for a similar program for senior citizens through the Council on Aging.

Veterans would not be eligible to participate in both programs, and there would only be one exemption per property.

"We're trying to keep younger veterans, who are working, in the community," said Griffin, noting the program would apply to veterans with a family of four and income level of less than $112,000.

Griffin said the volunteers would be placed in the school system and would have CORI checks in place.

"I have worked with [Superintendent of Schools] Bob Maguire and he made a commitment that he would help place those positions," said Griffin.
