Selectmen Discuss Medfield State Hospital, Boston Marathon Bombings, New Town Garage and More

Here's a recap of Tuesday's meeting.

 

The Board of Selectmen met on Tuesday and covered issues from the Boston Marathon Bombings and the former Medfield State Hospital to contracts for the local town garage and veterans' poppies. 

Here's a recap of their May 7 meeting with Chairman Mark Fisher and fellow members Osler Peterson and Richard DeSorgher.

* Selectmen recognized Medfield Police Officers Jim O’Neil and Eric Pellegrini who are part of the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council and were called into action after the Boston Marathon Bombings. Read the full story HERE. 

* Selectmen then met with representatives from the Massachusetts Division of Asset Management who outlined a new "sales partnership model" that would allow the town to purchase approximately 90 acres of land on the site.

The sale would be unrestricted and as is. The price would be based on the state recouping the majority of its sunk costs incurred since the buildings closed in 2004. This raised questions from the selectmen, Warrant Committee, State Hospital Redevelopment Committee, and community members.

* Action items included:

  • Appointed Adam Graber and Ryan McLaughlin to the Medfield Energy Committee
  • Granted parade permit and discharge of firearms permit to the Memorial Day Committee for Monday, May 27, 2013.
  • Granted permission to the American Legion Auxiliary to distribute poppies in honor of veterans.
  • Accepted with regret the resignation of Virginia Whyte from the Council on Aging on which she has served for 10 years. She is resigning due to personal reasons.
  • Awarded a contract for the demolition of the current town garage. The construction contract was not ready yet.
  • Approved an amendment to the HNTB contract for design and construction of the new town garage.
  • Received an invitation from Troop 89 to attend the Eagle Scout Court of Honor of James Callahan, Matthew McKinney and Parker Wooden on June 1.
  • Received a letter from the Boston Society of Civil Engineers announcing middle and high school students who participated in the annual "design a bridge online" competition.
  • Voted to sign appreciation letters for Karl Lord and Robert Luttman for their many years of service to the town.

* Licenses and Permits

  • Granted a wine and malt beverage permit to the Council on Aging for their Wednesday summer cookouts starting June 19 at The Center.
  • Granted a wine and malt beverage to the New 'n Towne Club for an event on June 4 at The Center. 
  • Heard that the Medfield Coalition for Public Education (MCPE) raised over $96,000 during its 25th anniversary appeal.
  • Granted permission to the Thunder Hill 4H Club to hold a Bottle and Can Drive at the transfer station on June 1. 

The selectmen's next meeting is May 21, 2013 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.
