Registry of Motor Vehicles Warns Against Fake RMV Sites

A warning from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Wednesday, July 3, 2013 – As summer heats up, MassDOT’s Registrar of Motor Vehicles Rachel Kaprielian is reminding customers to make sure they are conducting business at the RMV’s official online branch, MassRMV.com, and avoiding mimic RMV websites.

“Business is brisk during the summer months at our RMV branches across the Commonwealth,” said Registrar Kaprielian. “To avoid waiting in line, we encourage customers to try their transactions online, but only by accessing our official site website, MassRMV.com.”

Deceptive and mimic websites have been created to mislead customers into thinking they have reached the official RMV website. These mimic sites are typically reached by customers using online search engines. It is also smart to avoid any site that uses or references the ‘Department of Motor Vehicles’ or the ‘DMV’. The word ‘Department’ and the ‘DMV’ abbreviation are NOT used in Massachusetts.

Registry customers should be extra vigilant and avoid any sites seeking to charge fees to receive basic information or forms, as well as websites offering to conduct business online for you. Registry of Motor Vehicles fees charged through MassRMV.com are only assessed for transactions that result in official credentials, records or reports or when the customer requests a road test appointment.

Visiting MassRMV.com will guarantee your transaction is complete and your personal information is secure.

To ensure you are accessing the official site, please remember the following:

Check for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Seal

Look for links to MassDOT; the RMV is one of MassDOT’s Divisions

Make sure you can find RMV’s Customer Service number 857-DOT-8000/857-368-8000

Massachusetts we use the term Registry and ‘RMV’, log-off if the site references the ‘DMV’

At MassRMV.com you will never be charged to check your license, registration or title status.

At MassRMV.com you will never be charged to access Registry forms and information.

At MassRMV.com you will never be charged to change your address.

In February, the RMV website launched its redesigned website, MassRMV.com website which features modern navigation and accepts limited advertising.
