Please Come to Town Meeting and Support Article 1

Medfield will hold a special town meeting Oct. 7. The warrant includes two articles relating to the Medfield State Hospital.

Editor's Note: the following release was provided by John Thompson, Chairman of the Medfield State Hospital Mediation Committee. Medfield will hold a special town meeting on Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Three articles are on the warrant, including the one he writes about here:

"The Town of Medfield has made a significant investment in planning the future use of Medfield State Hospital. Over the past year I served the Town as a volunteer as Chairman of the Mediation Committee between Medfield and the current owners of Medfield State Hospital, the State Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM).    The committee included former Selectman Ann Thompson and Medfield Resident Bill Massaro, both of whom put in many hours of service to the town on the committee, along with Kristine Trierweiler, our Assistant Town Manager.  Article 1 is an outcome of the mediation.  In mediating a cleanup of the land for the hospital, we wanted to make sure that if our Public Water Supply Well #6 (closest to the State Hospital), ever needed a temporary shutdown, or if any of our other town wells needed to be temporarily shut down, we would have the former hospital tubular well-field (off Harding Street) and a water tower as an additional water supply and backup.

The cost to obtain a study to locate and permit  a new water supply would be several hundred thousand dollars, and it’s unlikely that MassDEP would allow any more public water withdrawal in the Charles River Watershed where we live.   Having the well field and water tower land (about 29 acres) for current and future public use is an important and worthwhile step in managing our ground water supplies.

Please come to Town Meeting on Monday October 7 and support Article 1."
