Medfield Applies for $8,000 Downtown Initiative Grant

The town of Medfield has applied for a grant to fund an Arts and Culture Economic Development Study under the Massachusetts Downtown Initiative FY2014 Technical Assistance Program.

The Medfield Cultural District is requesting $8,000 to fund an economic impact study of the town's nonprofit arts and cultural economy to integrate these assets in broader policy discussions to invigorate downtown.

An economic study will quantify the value of the cultural sector to demonstrate that cultural nonprofits have a significant impact on our commercial neighbors. MCD identified a scope of work with Americans for the Arts for a customized study. AA is the nation’s leading provider of studies that measure the economic impact of nonprofit arts and culture organizations and their audiences.

Town Planner Sarah Raposa told the Board of Selectmen at their Nov. 5 meeting that the town of Pittsfield is the only other town to have such a grant.

According to the application, in 2011, Medfield’s cultural leaders began planning the Medfield Cultural District and is working in an organized, collaborative fashion to receive state designation as a cultural district.
