Future of Medfield State Hospital to go to Vote at Special Town Meeting Monday

Voters in Medfield will gather Monday night to engage in a Special Town Meeting focused on what to do with the Medfield State Hospital property. 

More than 175 town residents took part in the third of a series of tours at the former Medfield State Hospital on Saturday as town officials prepare to engage in discussions with the state to determine the future of the property. The Medfield State Hospital Vision group recently posted a letter from a Medfield resident regarding the property.

On Monday night, voters will decide if the land should leave state control for the first time in 124 years or if it should stay within state control until state officials decide to sell it off for development

The meeting will involve discussion of three warrant articles. 

• If approved, the first article would allow the town to appropriate funds for the purpose of purchasing or acquiring a portion of the property and to allow the Medfield Board of Selectmen to enter discussions and agreement with the state to accomplish the purchase. 

• The second article would allow the town to appropriate funds to maintain and secure the land and building of the former state hospital property.

• The third article, meanwhile, looks to allow the Board of Selectmen to petition the General Court of Massachusetts for special legislation to authorize the purchase of all or a portion of the land and the buildings on the property.
