Medfield Selectmen Review Public Safety Budgets

At Tuesday's meeting, the Medfield BOS discussed the town mailbox survey, a 40B application for Medfield Woods and upcoming meetings regarding the former State Hospital, a possible casino in Foxboro, and the proposed railroad extension.

On Tuesday, the Medfield Board of Selectmen:

- Reviewed the 2013 budget for the Fire Department; department requesting an additional $8,400 over this fiscal year to cover longevity, two promotions, an increase in medical billing costs and equipment repair.

- Reviewed the 2013 budget for the Police Department; department requesting an increase of $33,631, the majority of which is for salaries because of a two percent increase.

- Heard an update from the Lyme Disease Study Committee, which reported a successful season with The committee will next focus on educating people on ways to keep themselves and their properties tick-free.

- Signed warrant to have Presidential Primary at The Center on March 6.

- Accepted with regret, the resignation of Fred Rogers from the Americans with Disabilities Act Review Committee.

- Learned there were 57 responses to the mailbox survey. The responses were nearly even with 53 percent in favor of replacing mailboxes damaged by municipal snow plow drivers, and 47 percent against. Selectman Anne Thompson said the issue will be “controversial” at town meeting.

- Signed a Letter of Interest to the MBTA expressing interest in leasing the abandoned train tracks for a greenway.

- Approved the minutes of selectmen’s meetings on Dec. 20 and Jan. 3.

- Heard an update on the former l and learned there is a meeting with DCAM on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.

- Learned the board denied a request from Medfield Woods for another extension on its 2008 application to build condos off West Street. Cited as a reason is there is now a second 40B application on file with the town for the same property.

- Learned the selectmen will meet with State Representatives James Timilty and Daniel Winslow on Jan. 31 regarding the casino issue as well as the proposed rail extensions.

- Learned that Rep. Denise Garlick will make a presentation regarding the ‘State of the State’ in Medfield on Feb. 1.

- Selectmen will meet on Feb. 6.
