Walpole Man Faces 5 Charges After Car Crash in Medfield

The 23-year-old motor vehicle operator was issued a court summons on five charges, including OUI liquor, following Monday morning's car crash on Main Street in Medfield.

A Walpole man is facing five charges following an early morning, one-car crash, Monday on Main Street in Medfield.

The 23-year-old Walpole resident of Appletree Lane was returning home from UMass Amherst when he reportedly lost control of his car and ended up approximately 75 feet from the road, according to Medfield Chief of Police Robert E. Meaney Jr.

Medfield Police received a call reporting a “bad motor vehicle crash” in front of 671 Main Street at 3:38 a.m. Monday, according to police reports. Medfield Police and Fire units responded to the scene and reported the operator was injured in the crash, according to police reports.

“It was a one-vehicle crash that did not strike anything of substance such as a mailbox, telephone pole or tree but travelled across the road, driveway, lawn, down and embankment and into the brush,” Meaney said. “The vehicle did end up on its side in the brush.”

The name of the operator has not been released because the summons for the operator is in the process of being presented to court to see if it will issue a complaint, according to Meaney.

The operator has been charged with leaving the scene of property damage, OUI liquor, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation and speeding. Meaney said the operator was not arrested because he was injured in the crash.

“The individual was not arrested because he was transported to the hospital,” Meaney said. “If we arrest him then we need to post a prisoner watch at the hospital, which creates an overtime expense that I try to avoid unless necessary.”

Meaney said he is “fairly comfortable” that the Walpole man will respond to the court summons when it is issued because the operator was returning home to Walpole from UMass Amherst.

As for the injuries the man sustained, Meaney said he did not have the particulars but the injuries did not appear to be serious at the scene.

“[The operator] was observed by the officers walking along Route 109,” said Meaney. “Sometimes the transport is done based on potential injuries because of vehicle damage and not necessarily on the obvious, visible injuries.”

The operator was transported to Norwood Hospital at 4 a.m.
