Speed a Factor in Violent Medfield Accident that Sent Three to Hospital

No fatalities were reported as a result of the accident, which required two Medflight helicopters.

Two Medflight helicopters were requested to the scene of what was described as a violent accident last week, the Medfield police and fire officials said Monday.

The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, when crews responded to 326 Main St. on a report of the two-car accident, according to the Medfield Fire Department.

Upon arrival, crews found one person ejected from one vehicle, with another person partially ejected from the other. Crews assisted a Medflight helicopter at the landing zone on Icehouse Road, while Medfield and Millis fire crews assisted with with a Lifeflight helicopter at the Medfield Transfer Station.

Speed is believed to have been the main factor in the crash, which involved two drivers from New Jersey in one vehicle and a woman driving in the second car. All three individuals were sent to the hospital, and while Medfield Police Chief Bob Meaney did not have details on the extent of their injuries, he confirmed there were no fatalities.

"The simplest way to put it is they were going too fast on the wrong side of the road," Meaney told Medfield Patch Tuesday. "There will probably be charges related to speeding and being on the wrong side of the road."

Rte. 109 was shut down for three hours, as the Massachusetts State Police reconstruction team and the Norfolk County District Attorney's office investigated the cause of the accident. The investigation is ongoing, Meaney said Tuesday. The Walpole Fire Department also responded to the scene of the accident, as did the Westwood Fire Department.

The Medfield Fire Department described the violence of the scene via its Facebook Page:

"The crash was so violent, it sent two wrenches that were in the car through a resident's window, an anti-theft steering wheel lock that was in the backseat of the car was impaled into a garage door, a tire jack was thrown 85 feet and opened upon impact, and a spare tire landed 200 feet form the impact site."
