“In an incident of this type, it was apparent to the officer that the operator was under the influence of something other than alcohol since there was no odor of alcohol or evidence of alcohol in the car,” Medfield Police Chief Robert E. Meaney Jr. said. “In order to prove the case in court, we need to determine the type of drug. We made use of a DRE (Drug Recognition Expert) from the Natick Police Department that the Medfield officer who was investigating the case knew.”

That DRE from Natick Police was detective Jason Sutherland, according to police logs, who came into the station and performed the drug test.

“The DRE [arrived] at our station and performed a series of tests in order to narrow the potential drug to a category,” Meaney said. “The arrested individual is then requested to provide a urine sample, which they can do or they can refuse to do just as an individual can take or refuse to take a breath test. The sample is then brought to the Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory for testing. The result of this test along with the DRE’s observations will be the basis for the physical evidence presented in court.”

As of Nov. 15, Meaney said he did not have the results of the drug test and did not know how long it takes to get the results.

Cronin’s bail was set at $140 and was bailed at 6:43 p.m. and left the Medfield Police Department with her mother.

“Bail is set at the discretion of the bail commissioner,” Meaney said. “They will make a determination of bail based on the individual’s prior criminal history, the crime that the person was arrested for and the likelihood of the person showing up in court.”
