Medfield Man Arrested on Multiple Charges After March 10 Incident

John Matukas of Philip St. was arrested on March 11 and charged with assault and battery, assault and battery by dangerous weapon, malicious destruction of property over $250 and resisting arrest.

A Medfield man was arrested on four charges for a March 10 incident with a woman at 101 Spring St, police said.

John Matukas, 48, of 68 Philip St. was charged with assault and battery (domestic), assault and battery by dangerous weapon (motor vehicle), malicious destruction of property over $250, resisting arrest in the early morning hours of March 11, according to police reports.

The incident occurred at 11:40 p.m. on March 10, Medfield Chief of Police Robert Meaney Jr. said. Officers responded to the call and placed Matukas under arrest at 1:05 a.m., according to police reports. At 1:51 a.m. an on-call judge issued an emergency 209-A (restraining order) to Matukas as a result of the incident, at the victim's request.

Meaney explains the following charges:

  • Assault and battery by dangerous weapon (motor vehicle): "The issue with using the motor vehicle as a dangerous weapon was because he hit the rear of [the victim's] vehicle with his vehicle."
  • Malicious destruction of property over $250: "The property destruction results from damage to the vehicle. The property destruction over $250 is not related to the damage that was done, such as a dent, but relates to the value of the item damaged – the value of the vehicle."
  •  Resisting arrest:  "The resisting arrest is simply that he gave more than the usual amount of resistance than is typical for an arrest. In this case the officers were engaged in a brief struggle in order to restrain him."

Matukas was served the 209-A in hand at 2:47 a.m. and at 4:45 a.m. Bail Comm. Tom Hobin was in the station to bail Matukas.
