Fire Destroys 200-year-old Home in Westwood

A fire on Dover Road destroyed a 200-year-old home Monday morning.

If you travel the back roads from Medfield to Route 128, you've seen it a thousand times -- that majestic Greek Revival at the intersection of Dover Road and High Rock on two acres of prestine land.

That view changed forever on Monday morning when the historic home fell victim to a fire that reportedly brewed for hours before neighbors saw it and called 911 at 5:30 a.m.

Westwood called in mutual aid from Dover, Norwood, Walpole, Canton, and Needham to help fight the three alarm fire, according to NECN.

The Medfield Fire Department sent an engine to the Westwood fire station to provide coverage in the event of another fire, said Medfield Police Chief Robert Meaney Jr.

Passersby have watched for what seems like years as the historic home was diligently renovated, reportedly for a family who was to move into it when it was finished.

The four bedroom, five bath house on 2.2 acres, was built in 1830, and was valued around $1 million, according to trulia.com.

Last year, the property was assessed at $967,500 and the owners paid $14,000 in taxes.

The house was a total loss and was knocked down by Monday afternoon.

On Tuesday, there was little evidence the house ever stood there at all. The barn is still standing and is seemingly untouched.

The State Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire.

According to Westwood Fire Chief William Scoble, the rear of the house was the first to ignite before the blaze spread to other parts of the unoccupied home and burned for several hours before nearby residents called for help.

"The fire was in the first and second floors and through the attic upon our arrival," Scoble said on Monday.
