Banned Books: Medfield Public Library Event Encourages a Good Reading

The American Library Association will observe Banned Books Week from Sept. 22 to 28.

Who doesn't want to read something they're not supposed to? Medfield Town Library is pulling together a display of banned books as part of "Banned Books Week 2013."

When the Medfield Library creates its display, for the week of Sept. 22 to 28, it will encourage community reading of the texts. According to a post on the library site: "Come to the library and check out our display and guide of banned books. For each banned book you read, get a raffle ticket for a chance to win a gift card."

The American Library Association will recognize the books banned in some or parts of the U.S. from Sept. 22 to 28. The Library of Congress recently created an exhibit of "Banned Books that Shaped America."

In addition to well-known banned books, such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, banned books have included: Moby Dick, or The Whale, which was banned in a Texas school district in 1996 because it "conflicted with their community values.” Also, In Cold Blood, which was banned in Savannah, GA after a parent complained of "sex, violence and profanity" in the book.

Those two, along with about 10 others cited by the Library of Congress, are in my shelves at home. What books do you have that have been banned?
