Medfield Cultural Council Launches Community Survey

The Cultural Council asks Medfield residents about cultural events in Medfield. The deadline to take the survey is August 17.

The Medfield Cultural Council has launched a short on-line survey for Medfield residents to voice their opinions on cultural programming in town.

“The survey is 10 questions and should take about three minutes to complete” said Council Chair Jean Mineo. “One goal is to understand how people hear about cultural events in Medfield so we can best advise grantees and help promote their events.”

The Medfield Cultural Council is one of 329 Local Cultural Councils (LCC) across the state that is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, humanities and sciences annually, according to the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

The Massachusetts Cultural Council provides financial support to the LCCs; Medfield receives approximately $4,000 annually to redistribute to programs in the community.

A volunteer committee solicits applications and determines grant awards each fall. The deadline for applications is October 15 every year.

“Typically, Medfield gets requests that total about $25,000 or more each grant cycle. We have to make some really tough choices about where to allocate our limited resources. The survey also asks people to identify their cultural interests to guide our decision making,” said Mineo.

The Council has funded a variety of programs including concerts for seniors and in the schools, Shakespeare at the gazebo, and programs at Zullo Gallery, the Dwight Derby House, and at Vine Lake Cemetery, among others.

Everyone is invited to complete the survey, whether they participate in cultural activities or not. “This is a first step, which will undoubtedly lead to more questions about culture in our community,” Mineo said. “We want community input.”
