Luttman: The Fight for a Better Future

Editor's note: The following article was written by MHS student Michaela Luttman, a member of the student newspaper, "The Kingsbury Chronicle." Luttman's piece is part of Medfield Patch's weekly series, "Warrior Weekly," which appears every Wednesday.

With temperatures reaching the 50s and 60s in December and January, many blame global warming. With that accusation comes fear for our environment and what we can do to protect our planet. At , the Environmental Club is doing what they can to bring awareness to this issue.

I am one of the leaders of the club, which is advised by Mr. Cushing, and with meetings every Tuesday, our main focus is to do what we can to help save our environment. Currently, we are collecting used batteries from teachers and students to be recycled. Batteries contain harmful metals and chemicals and by recycling instead of throwing away, we prevent these harmful substances from entering landfills. Though we have just begun this project, we hope teachers and students will quickly catch on and recycle all their used batteries.

Another project we have focused our attention on is selling reusable water bottles. These water bottles are to replace plastic water bottles, which only harm our environment more. The proceeds from each purchase, $10 each, will go towards our club.

Lastly, with the proceeds from the water bottles and other fundraisers, our ultimate goal for this year is to buy the school library an automatic double-sided printer. Numerous students enter the library every day to print out assignments. Many are in too much of a hurry to figure out how to double-side their papers or just do not care to do so. With this printer, every assignment printed is automatically double-sided. The amount of paper that will be saved from this printer will further help our effort to do our part in saving the environment.

With many worried about the future of our environment, dedicated students at Medfield High School are doing their part to ensure for a brighter future. As one of the presidents of the club, Phaedra Ghazi, says, “I think recycling batteries is a small thing to do, but in the end the impact will be great.”

With positive attitudes and strong ideas, the Environmental Club at Medfield High Schools is moving forward to help save our planet.
