On a recent steamy afternoon, we found ourselves in need of a milkshake and air conditioning and soon after, found ourselves saddled up to the lunch counter at .
It was noontime, so our plans for a simple shake turned into a full lunch including a grilled chicken Caesar wrap, tuna salad on light rye, and macaroni and cheese.
While waiting for our lunch to arrive, we soaked in our surroundings. Lord’s is an icon in the community as is the lunch counter itself.
Originally run by founder Raymond Lord and then Bill Kelly, the counter at the back of the store is now run by Coffee Sensations of Medway - however not much else has changed since the store opened in 1940.
Everything at the counter is original – including the original Coke machine from 1940 and the diner stools – except for the black-and-white checked tiles and the Formica countertop (which replaced a solid piece of marble in the 1960s, an ‘update’ the Kelly family said it would re-think if they had it to do over again).
Years ago, the Lord’s stools were the place to be every morning to catch up on town gossip over coffee; the Kellys say the line was sometimes 30-people-deep by the time the doors opened.
Today, Coffee Sensations maintains a steady business of coffee, breakfast, lunch and sweets Sunday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. (summer hours).
Breakfast is served all day and includes everything from raisin toast, muffins, waffles, crepes and omelets all the way up to the “Sensational” breakfast of three eggs, two pancakes, two slices of bacon, two sausage links, home fries and toast.
Lunch includes wraps and sandwiches (which we sampled), paninis, hamburgers, hotdogs, a steak bomb, and a daily soup-and-half-sandwich special. All burgers and dogs come with pickle and chips that can be replaced with their “famous homemade cole slaw or potato salad,” if you so choose.
As might be expected, Coffee Sensations offers a bottomless cup of (Arabica) coffee as well with which you can enjoy one of many desserts, including a decadent homemade brownie or a delicious ice cream sundae.
For generations, Medfield folks have been satisfying their sweet tooth, filling their stomachs, and quenching their thirsts at the lunch counter at Lord’s – I highly recommend you do the same.
And come to think of it, we never did get that milkshake. But not to worry, there’s always next time!
