Continuing the Vision

You may be wondering why there is scaffolding around parts of the building and plastic covering some of the windows at the library.  We are in the process of removing the failed storm windows, stabilizing the original antique windows , and installing new, energy saving, custom-built storm windows with screens.  This project is one of many undertaken in the last five years “to make this old beauty sparkle” as Lauren Feeney, Library Trustee said at the October meeting of Board of Library Trustees.

Later this fall we will be upgrading the secondary heating system with a high efficiency self-adjusting boiler that has ambient temperature sensors.  Last year we completed the replacement of all of the heating and cooling rooftop units and the installation of smart thermostats. Two thirds of the building has been newly carpeted.  The entrance way has been improved with the installation of stable wrought iron railings and re-laid brick walkways.   A new wooden floor was laid in the lovely old reading room and the original shelving was restored in the Dailey Room.  We will continue to paint and add new furnishings as funding allows.

The Memorial Public Library is the product of a successful public-private partnership between the Town of Medfield and private benefactors.  Granville Dailey donated the land on which the library is situated and the funds to build the original library, dedicated in 1917 in memory of his wife and daughter.  There have been many library benefactors during the last century.  Through their generosity and funds from the town’s capital improvement budget we continue to maintain and modernize Medfield’s beautiful public library.
