Be an Autodidact, or How to Teach Yourself Everything

Be an Autodidact, or, How to Teach Yourself Everything

by Mare Parker-O’Toole, Librarian

Libraries serve many different needs providing books, movies, story hours, discussion groups, homework centers, places to socializing as well as the use of computers and other technology. As the world evolves so libraries have been evolving beyond just providing the books that originally defined them to providing technology and information about everything.  Technology itself is evolving at a breakneck pace. This pace is driving all of us to be continually learning just to try and keep up, or, as Alice in Wonderland would have said …”running as fast as one can just to stay in the same place.” This phenomenally fast technological evolution is driving us to be continually learning. But how do you do it?

This is something that libraries are particularly well suited to help you with. Adults can learn how to become “self-directed learners” You may be doing this already. Statistical studies claim that the average adult embarks on 7 self-directed learning projects per year. This can be things such as teaching oneself to knit, to use a computer, to speak another language, to learn how to read tarot cards, to learn a new computer program that might lead to a job. There are many range of ways to learn that can match your learning style. Not all people learn by reading. Some other learning styles include: watching videos, listening to audio files, and hands-on tactile learning. We can help you figure out what will work for you and guide you to the information that can help you embark on your life-long learning.
