Picachu, the First Degu at Medfield Animal Shelter

Every week the Medfield Animal Shelter features a pet currently looking for a home. This week's pet is a Degu named Picachu.

Meet Picachu

Picachu has the distinction of being the first Degu ever in the Medfield Shelter's care!  He is a 3 year old Degu. He has a similar look to a chinchilla (but is more the size of a hamster) and has similar needs. He came to the shelter because his teenage owner has been unable to care for her pets and has given them up. He has a wonderful multi-level cage with ladders, a wheel and a hammock that will go with him to his new home. Pikachu is used to being held and also is happy to spend time exploring and playing on his own. Very curious by nature he loves to explore every inch of his cage.

Degus make great pets because they are awake during the day and tend to have bubbly personalities.  Picachu eats hay, pellets and lettuce. Degus can't tolerate any sugar in their diets and can easily become diabetic if there diet does include sugar.  Degus need regular sand baths to keep their coats healthy and free from grease. Chinchilla sand is ideal for this (you can purchase it at any pet supply store). They should have access to a sand bath two or three times a week. If you would like to adopt Picachu, please fill out our adoption application or stop by and meet him during our adoption hours on Saturday from 11:00 - 1:00.
