Vine Lake Cemetery to Feature Historic Events on Patriots' Day

Medfield's Vine Lake Preservation Trust will reveal its first-ever map and guide to the Old Section of the cemetery during an open house on Monday, April 16.

A presentation by a Minuteman and author at an historic gravesite as well as the distribution of the first-ever map and guide to the Old Section will happen Monday, April 16 during a 10 a.m. to noon open house at the cemetery, 625 Main St.

To celebrate Patriots’ Day, a special visit will be made by one of the Patriot reenactors, who earlier that morning was at Lexington Green. Resplendent in his uniform, Sam Forman will conduct two short presentations at the gravesite of Mercy Scollay, Medfield’s well-deserving but little recognized Daughter of Liberty. Forman will announce his 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. presentations by the firing of his musket. In addition, his recent book about General Joseph Warren, Mercy’s fiancée, will be for sale. Mercy’s portrait will be displayed for the first time.

Between 10 a.m. and noon, Vine Lake Preservation Trust will distribute its long-awaited free map and guide to Vine Lake Cemetery’s Old Section. ‘Walk Among the Shadows’ is a 50-site guide to memorials featuring famous and noteworthy persons as well as gravestone art. Users can begin a walking tour at any site, and visit the cemetery in a leisurely manner.
