Home Spa Treatment for Your Feet

reflexology, foot care, spa treatment

It’s been said “"show me a grumpy person and I'll show you a person with sore feet.” (No, this did not  come out of a fortune cookie.) Sore feet can affect your productivity, your posture and your mood. Your feet are designed to carry your weight for thousands of miles over the course of your life. They are delicately designed instruments with more bones (54 bones in the feet out of 206 bones in the entire body) than any other part of your skeletal system. When you consider the interplay of muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones that your feet go through with each and every step, it is amazing that sore feet don’t happen more often than they do. Considering the amount of services that your feet provide your body every day, not to mention the abuse we typically put them through (bad shoes or fallen arches, etc.) Don’t you think your feet deserve some pampering? Surprisingly, it doesn’t take much. Here is a quick run through of a foot pampering routine that will make your feet feel appreciated.

How about a foot reflexology session? Foot Reflexology is generally misunderstood as a foot massage, but it is much more than that. Foot Reflexology is a scientific art based on the premise that there are zones and reflex areas in the feet that correspond to all body parts. Reflexology is administered by using the application of thumb and finger pressure to specific points on the feet. Each specific point corresponds with an internal organ and other structure. The pressure allows the release of blocked energy and built up toxins. During a treatment, mental and physical tensions are released and a state of relaxation is induced. This allows the body to improve circulation, encourage lymphatic drainage, stimulate nerve pathways and relax muscles. Not only are your feet being pampered but your glands and organs are being rebalanced. o  Fill basin or tub with six to eight inches of hot water. The ideal temperature is about 110 F. Add about 1 cup of Epsom salt or foot salt per gallon. Stir to dissolve salts.
o   Sit in a comfortable chair to soak your feet for twenty minutes to half an hour. Add hot water as desired (I have an electric teapot by my side) to keep the water temperature comfortably warm. Have a cup of tea ready, a magazine or book to cozy up while soaking. Have soft music playing in the background. This is a great time to meditate also.
o  Massage feet with foot scrub focusing on the heels and ankles to get rid of built up dead skin and around the toes. (Or better yet, have someone massage your feet.) Return feet to tub to rinse and soak a few more minutes.
o  Towel feet dry with towel. Rub both feet hard enough to remove any dead skin loosened by the soaking. Pay special attention to spaces between the toes and where the toes join the top of the feet.
o  Clip toenails with clippers, being careful to cut straight across. Don't angle the corners to discourage ingrown toenails.
o  File toenails with emery board or file to smooth edges. Round corners very slightly to avoid sharp corners digging into adjacent toes.
o  Apply lotion to feet, pay special attention to heels and ankles where skin is most likely to be dry and scaly. Use the opportunity to massage lotion into the feet, soothing tired muscles.
o  You may apply petroleum jelly to feet, especially to heels and ankle bones. The petroleum jelly  will keep the moisture from the lotion against your skin, making it even more effective for dry skin.
o  Slip on warm, absorbent socks immediately to keep feet warm and prevent Vaseline from rubbing off on unwanted places.
o Enjoy the inner peace and quiet.
