June is National Home Safety Month

Over 21 million injuries that result in medical visits
happen in the home on average per year. In June the
Home Safety Council strives to educate families to take
actions that will increase the safety of their homes. Older
adults are extremely vulnerable to injuries in the home,
particularly falls. It is very important, especially for older
adults who might be living alone, to make their home as
safe as possible.

Important safety guidelines to follow:

• Install grab bars in the bath or shower and near
the toilet
• Place a nonslip mat on the floor in the bathroom
• Install handrails on both sides of all stairs and steps
• Place a light and light switches at the top and bottom
of the stairs
• Remove or tape down small rugs
• Keep any clutter in a closet and off of the floor
• Electrical cords must be secured to the floor
• Keep on a nightlight in case you need to get up in the
middle of the night
• Wipe up any spills the second they happen
• Make sure all smoke detectors are properly working

Create a checklist and follow these simple guidelines in
order to ensure your family or loved ones are safer in
their home.
