Medfield High School Musician Earns 'All-National' Status

Violist Ida Xu will perform in the All-National Symphony Orchestra in Nashville.

Editor's Note: the following information was provided by the Medfield Music Association.

Medfield High School senior and violist Ida Xu has earned national recognition from the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and will be traveling to Nashville, Tennessee, at the end of October to perform with 670 other high school students who earned similar “All-National” status.

Xu is one of 51 students from Massachusetts, and the only one from Medfield who has advanced to the All-National level after applying and auditioning for a spot. She is among 150 students in the All-National symphony orchestra that will be conducted by Miriam Burns from the New York Philharmonic. Other All-National student ensembles performing at Nashville include choral, jazz and band.

To even be considered for All-National, Xu had to go through a series of regional and state auditions competing against other music students. After getting through those competitions, she was ultimately one of three Medfield students selected for All-State and invited to perform at Boston Symphony Hall this past spring; 2013 was the fourth year Xu made it to All-State (i.e., all four years at MHS).

Getting into All-National is the highest honor Xu can achieve through NAfME-sponsored competitions. Her performance will take place on Oct. 30 in Nashville. Medfield Music Director Doug Olsen will also be going with Xu and attending the concurrent conference for music educators.  The Medfield Music Association is helping to sponsor Xu’s trip and Olsen’s conference participation.
