Peak House to End Summer Tours with 9/11 Tribute

The Medfield Historical Society’s Peak House on Main Street will end its summer open house tour schedule on Sunday, Sept. 11 with a special exhibit to solemnly remember those who lost their lives on that tragic day.

On the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, the historical society will honor those who died in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania by displaying its historic flag collection on the front lawn of the Peak House.

Flags from different time periods of Medfield's history will be on display, including the 45-star American Flag that flew over the Old Corner Store (site of today's Mobil gas station), the Bicentennial Union Jack flag that flew over Baxter Park during the 1976 Bicentennial year, the Iran Hostage Flag that flew over Baxter Park during the 444 days our hostages were held in Iran. A variety of World War II service flags and other American flags will also be on display contingent upon the weather.

The exhibit will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather. The Peak House will be open for tours for a final time from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 before it closes for the winter.

Throughout the summer, volunteers from the society served as tour guides to answer questions about the historic house listed as a National Historic Site. Many people from Medfield and surrounding areas visited it weekly and the society thanks those who did so and for their contributions to maintain the house.

The Peak House was deeded to the historical society in 1924 and has been maintained by it since that time. Donations from the Sunday tour program and the Pantry Sale have been the only sources of this maintenance except for capital expenditures from society operating funds and grants from local organizations.

The Peak House will be open again in November on the Saturday before Thanksgiving for its annual “Pantry Sale,” the major fund raising event of the society, or may be visited by appointment.
