With its population of 12,660, Medfield was lauded for its prime location "smack in the middle of the square made by the Mass. Pike, Interstate 95 and I-495, Medfield is nothing if not convenient."

Medfield's median single-family home price in 2012 was $590,000, up 17.76% from 2011, according to the Globe.

Realtor Joan Snow of Medfield Properties told the Globe that home buyers are also attracted to Medfield's "range of activities from horseback riding at the Norfolk Hunt Club to swimming lessons at the town pond, from summer concerts and Shakespeare in the Park at the Town Gazebo to Medfield Day."

Joining Medfield on this list were Beverly, Cambridge, Freetown, Groveland, Newbury, Revere, Rockland, Shirley, South Boston, Stoughton, Swampscott, and Topsfield.

The Globe named 19 "honorable mention" communities including nearby Easton, Natick, and Weston; and listed Framingham as one of 10 communities "where condos are hottest."

Only communities with 50 or more sales in 2012 were included in this feature, according to the Globe.
