A small group of community members gathered at the Medfield Historical Society building on Saturday to discuss history in the making: Lord's Department Store, a downtown landmark for 73 years, will be closing on Feb. 28.

Nancy Norris organized that meeting.

"It's just so sudden so my biggest concern was just to hop on it fast and make sure something got organized," she said.

"What I really wanted to do was to get the ball rolling because it's going to close soon; Lord's will be gone before we know it," said .

"I was hoping that all the folks who are 'tied in' and 'connected' in town would show up and run with it, and they did," she said.

Celebration plans include a gathering at the iconic store on Friday, Feb. 15, starting at 6:30 p.m., the traditional start time of Lord's annual Midnight Madness event.

"It will be kind of like a Midnight Madness celebration," said Norris, noting they hope to have half donuts, too.

Other party plans include photos at the lunch counter in exchange for a donation to the Bill Kelly Scholarship Fund, continued contributions to the digital memory book on Facebook and the memory book at the front of Lord's, music, guest speakers, a toast, and a few other surprises.

"We want to thank the Kelly family for everything they've done and we also want to preserve, for the future, the spirit of what Lord's brought to our community," said Norris.

The group will meet again on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. at the Medfield Historical Society, 6 Pleasant Street; the public is invited and encouraged to attend.
